The Roots of Music’s mission founded by Derrick Tabb of Rebirth Brass Band is to teach, support, and empower New Orleans’ youth through music education, academic support, and personal mentorship, while preserving and promoting New Orleans’ unique musical and cultural heritage. The goal is to give the youth of New Orleans the resources to live positive, productive, and self-reliant lives in community with others.
The Roots of Music is a year-round program for low-income, 9-to-14-year-olds that fills a void in our city’s middle school music education programs.  Once an integral part of New Orleans middle schools, after Katrina many schools discontinued their marching bands and music programs for this age group.

Ticket Contest: Dumpstaphunk @ Stage One (Fairfield, CT)

Ticket Giveaway: Dumpstaphunk
September 20 on StageOne — With the end of August, we're left with the dreadful realization that another summer is winding to a close. Although Labor Day marks the last hurrah for white pants, barbecues and kids up late on a Sunday night, it is not the end of the season. People, until the clock strikes midnight on Sept. 21, it's still summer!

And, while the mere mention of this can dampen everyone's mood, we have the perfect solution: live music. We're giving away a couple pairs of tickets to master funkateers, Dumpstaphunk, who'll lay down some of the tightest funk grooves this side of Maceo Parker and help us all keep that summer groove.

HOW TO ENTER: 1) Head on over to our facebook page. 2) Participate 3) Sit back, relax, and hope that you're one of our fabulous Facebook fans who'll win.

Listen: Preview the new Trombone Shorty album

UPDATE:  STREAM THE ENTIRE ALBUM HERE

Say That to This cover art
Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue will soon release their third album on Verve, Say That to This. After recording his first two albums with Galactic's Ben Ellman, Shorty teamed with producer and R&B artist Raphael Saadiq to make an album that is very definitely Shorty and his band, but with a few more soulful, song-oriented contours. His last album was guest-heavy; this time around, Shorty and his band are the focus, even when The Meters join them for a sweet version of "Be My Lady."

Say That to This is due out on Tuesday, September 10, and here's a preview.

ABOUT LOST BAYOU RAMBLERS:

Lost Bayou Ramblers was born deep in South Louisiana performing ol
d style, predominantly acoustic Cajun music at clubs and festivals across the US, Europe, and Canada. After years of playing traditional style, the Lost Bayou Ramblers found themselves needing to grow. To create a new sound that combined not just the sounds of their heritage, but all the musical influences they grew up loving. It began with the recording of their new album Mammoth Waltz at Dockside Studios in Maurice, La. The idea was to incorporate more influences, sounds, technology, and stylings with the traditional Cajun instrumentation. The resulting 11 tracks speak for themselves.

By chance and by friendship, a number of talented special guests inspired Lost Bayou Ramblers by bringing their own unique backgrounds to the recordings. The band began experimenting more in their live shows, and their new sound was born. It has developed into a mammoth style that evokes the power of it’s predecessors while reaching for the future; when Lost Bayou Ramblers is at full fervor, even the traditional accordion and fiddle take on new modern dynamics.

Whether you are a rock purist, Cajun purist, or looking for something more adventurous from both genres, Mammoth Waltz delivers.
