The Roots of Music’s mission founded by Derrick Tabb of Rebirth Brass Band is to teach, support, and empower New Orleans’ youth through music education, academic support, and personal mentorship, while preserving and promoting New Orleans’ unique musical and cultural heritage. The goal is to give the youth of New Orleans the resources to live positive, productive, and self-reliant lives in community with others.
The Roots of Music is a year-round program for low-income, 9-to-14-year-olds that fills a void in our city’s middle school music education programs.  Once an integral part of New Orleans middle schools, after Katrina many schools discontinued their marching bands and music programs for this age group.
