It's no stretch to say that The Meters singlehandedly defined New Orleans funk. Performing and recording their own music throughout the latter half of the '60s and into the '70s, this seminal group laid the foundation for what is now a ubiquitous genre, influencing countless funk musicians with their earthy, down-home style. Tracks like "Cissy Strut," "Look-Ka Py Py," "Sophisticated Sissy," and "Chicken Strut" are staples of the funk genre, and the band's work backing artists like Dr. John, Robert Palmer, Lee Dorsey, and even Paul McCartney is instantly recognizable. The Meters' sound also provided a jumping off point for much of the hip-hop of the '80s and '90s, with rap luminaries like LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Run DMC, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, and more sampling the band's tracks.

Upcoming: Mardi Gras Ball feat. Kermit & Bonerama (discount below)

w/ special guests
Mardi Gras. The mere mention of these two words convey thoughts of wild celebrations, beads flying through the air, feathered hats, free-spirited dancing and a lot of booze and smiles. Nolafunk.com will help create this scene with your help. We’ll provide you with masks, hats, white cloths and beads. Lots and lots of BEADS! So bring your Mardi Gras outfits and your will to dance. The 6th Annual Mardi Gras Ball might be the best yet.

BONERAMA
Even in a city that doesn’t play by the rules, New Orleans’ Bonerama is something different. They can evoke vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation in the same set; maybe even the same song. Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone, hailed as “the ultimate in brass balls” and praised for their “…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls.”

KERMIT RUFFINS
New Orleans is the only place on the planet that could have produced native son Kermit Ruffins. Whether he's blowing trumpet on a Louis Armstrong classic or one of his own hot numbers, Ruffins embraces the tune with the true spirit of the city. Ruffins' music, like New Orleans itself, swings hard with a big heart as it remembers tradition and the importance of good-timin” fun.

As our holiday gift to you for being a wonderful Nolafunk.com supporter, we're offering tickets for the 2/19 Mardi Gras Ball for 50% off!
Just enter NolaHoliday into the "Access Code" box on TicketWeb
This offer will be good through January 1st

Upcoming: 1 Month To Mardi Gras feat. Big Sam's Funky Nation @ le poisson rouge

“One Month To Mardi Gras” w/
Sat., February 05, 2011 / 7:00 PM

Big Sam’s Funky Nation

Big Sam's Funky Nation have established their presence on the forefront of the New Orleans music scene. Trombone powerhouse and band leader "Big Sam" Williams, formerly of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, has been celebrated as "the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz" by the San Francisco Chronicle and the band has been touted for consistently "bringing a straight raw party" by Jambase. 2010 has been a busy year for The Nation, with two European tours (France and Greece), a recurring role in the new HBO original series "Treme", and a busy US touring schedule including festivals such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival, South by Southwest, Doheney Blues Festival and Gathering of the Vibes. For 2011, BSFN does not intend to slow down. The momentum BSFN has recently accumulated will only continue to grow off of the successful release of their fourth and most prolific album to date, King Of The Party. Be on the lookout for BSFN's masterful blend of a rock, with an improv-style associated with jazz and a horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of funk. The energy level is always high voltage when BSFN takes the stage.

Eric Krasno & Chapter 2

Eric Krasno is a founding member of Soulive and hip-hop production team Fyre Dept. Soulive has released records on Velour Recordings, Blue Note and recently released No Place Like Soul on the legendary Stax label. Soulive has toured the US and globe, playing in Africa, Japan, Russia, Brazil and has opened for the Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band. Since forming in 1999, Soulive has developed a reputation as one of the most sought after instrumental soul- funk trios around, a hard-touring live act that’s thrown down everywhere from small rock clubs to major festivals worldwide.

Chapter 2 is the next phase in the story of Eric and his longtime collaborator, drummer Adam Deitch, alongside vocalist and keyboardist Nigel Hall and bassist Louis Cato.

Eric has worked also with countless musicians, from jazz icons Joshua Redman, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Chaka Khan to hip hop visionaries like 50-Cent, GZA and Talib Kweli. He is known throughout jazz, funk, and hip-hop circles for his virtuosic playing and production talents.

Yellowcake

Diversity is the key ingredient to the Yellowcake sound. With music that transcends culture, style and language, this NYC band is putting a global pulse on the city's music scene. Yellowcake officially formed in 2009 and today is a group of seven individuals who share a passion for creating original music that draws on their different backgrounds and musical influences. From the cross-genre melding of Latin rhythms with funk grooves to the group’s unique combination of musicians, you never know what you might see, hear, or feel at a Yellowcake show. Come vibe.
