Upcoming: Henry Butler curates Ray Charles @ Jazz Stnadard

IMPULSE! NIGHTS: RAY CHARLES GENIUS + SOUL = JAZZ

Curated by Henry Butler
performer name

  • Henry Butler - piano/vocals
    Vincent Herring - alto saxophone
    Cocoran Holt - bass
    Ali Jackson - drums

Sunday, Apr 24, 2011 9:30 PM

Genius + Soul = Jazz placed Ray Charles at the head of the Count Basie Orchestra with cornetist Thad Jones, guitarist Freddie Green, and saxophonists Billy Mitchell and Frank Wess all on board for the date. Charles played Hammond B-3 organ on this mostly–instrumental set, vocalizing only on two blues numbers, “I’ve Got News for You” and “I’m Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town.” Ray’s Latin–soul rendition of “One Mint Julep” (arranged by Quincy Jones) reached Number One R&B/Number Eight Pop – the biggest hit single ever to bear the Impulse! logo. Closing out the incredible 5-night run of Impulse! music, the great blues and jazz pianist/vocalist from New Orleans, Henry Butler, will bring down the house with 2 sets of rousing music celebrating “Brother Ray!”

NY Times: New Orleans Horns, Raw and Funky

The Rebirth Brass Band ended its full-throttle show at Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday night more or less swarmed, yielding the stage to an eager throng. This of course was a handy bit of showmanship, timed to coincide with several of the band’s best-loved New Orleans anthems (“Feel Like Funkin’ It Up,” “Cassanova,” Do Whatcha Wanna”) and with the climax of accumulated energies in the room. But it was also an affirmation of core principles. A stage is little more than a platform for the Rebirth Brass Band, and the distance it imposes on an audience is a passing inconvenience, even on the road.

Rebirth, as the band is often hailed at home, has barely deviated from the formula set by its leader, the sousaphone player Phil Frazier, in 1983. Commingling parade-band protocols with the more ragged aspects of jazz and funk — “junk music” is Mr. Frazier’s term for the crossbred result — the group chases down euphoria one boisterous groove at a time. In New Orleans the band plays most Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf Bar, where the main space accommodates about as many people as the Brooklyn Bowl stage.

This was a stop on the road in support of a sturdy new album, “Rebirth of New Orleans,” on the Basin Street label. (The band is traveling most of this month, before returning home in time for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. This summer it will headline “A Night in Treme,” a tour pegged to the HBO series.) At times there was a hint of the routine in the show’s pacing, but never a flagging of intensity. And the newer songs held their ground against the classics: “I Like It Like That,” with a churning beat, a blaring trumpet lead and a puttering riff for saxophone and trombone, was as exhilarating as anything else in the set.

Rebirth’s trademark is loose precision, unruly at the granular level but cohesive on the whole. Mr. Frazier and his brother, Keith Frazier, who plays bass drum, held down a resilient low end; the tenor saxophonist Vincent Broussard and the trombonist Corey Henry maintained the mid-range, often sparring on the fly.

Two assertive trumpeters, Glen Andrews and Derrick Shezbie, carried most of the melodies, arranged in fortified octaves or a resplendent unison. (In “What Goes Around Comes Around” they also traded eight-bar solo bursts.) As for the snare drummer, Derrick Tabb, his second-line rhythms and syncopated rudiments gave the music its kinetic thrust, riveting and funky.

Thursday’s show happened to precede Bowl Train, a weekly late-night D.J. set by Questlove, the drummer with the Roots. Specializing in myriad strains of R&B — one stretch had him transitioning from Sunshine Anderson’s “Heard It All Before” into the Heavy D remix of Soul for Real’s “Candy Rain,” into signature hits by Experience Unlimited and Soul II Soul — he made at least one nod to the occasion. His first track was a brass-band version of Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature.” It was probably the one by the Youngblood Brass Band, not Rebirth, but the resonance was clear enough.

Free EP Download: Big Freedia (NolaBounce)

by Alex Rawls

Scion A/V Presents: Big Freedia by ScionAV

Big Freedia also got love at RollingStone.com recently, where writer Chuck Eddy considered the local bounce rapper one of the highlights of his SXSW:

Probably this writer’s favorite SXSW set: Towering transvestite New Orleans bounce-rapper Big Freedia, resplendent in red leather above white T-shirt and spangly bracelets and below sparkling Christmas-tree-ornament earrings and long ponytail extensions, channeling Little Richard on a stage that could’ve been in small-town church basement, with late sainted bounce-rapper Magnolia Shorty’s picture on the DJ table. Male and female dancers – the latter looking like she just stepped out of a La Grange cathouse, with huge painted-on eyelashes – helped Big Freedia roll rump-cheeks in the crowd’s direction. The raps were ebullient chants, really: “Spicey! He really like me! His old lady! She wanna fight me!” “I got that gin in my system! Somebody gonna be my victim!” Before it was over, much of the audience had taken Big Freedia up on an offer to join him/her up there on stage.

Upcoming: Rebirth Brass Band @ Brooklyn Bowl

CEG & Nolafunk.com Present:

Rebirth Brass Band

Outer Borough Brass Band

Brooklyn Bowl
Thu, April 7, 2011

Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the now infamous Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature brand of heavy funk has not only won over several generations of music lovers, it has become the soundtrack to an entire city. In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

Brass band music is joyful, heart-pumping and it was born and bred in soul-saturated New Orleans. Rebirth takes brassy funk to the city's streets and clubs, doing second-line parades just about every Sunday and rocking regular gigs at night. But Rebirths reach is far beyond sweet-home New Orleans. Founded by tuba man and bandleader Phillip Frazier in 1983, Rebirth has toured the United States, Europe, and Africa. Frazier has compared brass music to gospel music saying "It's very spiritual because the same feeling you get listening to gospel music, that feeling hits you with our band. It hits you in the heart, makes you want get up and shout".

Dumpstaphunk: Greasy Goodness

By: Dennis Cook

Dumpstaphunk by Ian Rawn
Being original at this stage in music is a tough, tough challenge. So many moves are well rehearsed and widely known, and it’s good enough for most to merely replicate well what others have done before. However, there are still artists that innovate even as they move amongst the familiar elements of a genre. Their ears and skilled hands navigate a new way forward even as the old comfortable scenery flies past. Perhaps the greatest single tribute Dumpstaphunk pays to their New Orleans funk heritage is how they’ve made this music their own, echoing the vibe AND creativity of forefathers like Louis Armstrong and Dr. John in a quest for good footin’ music.

“We know what this music is. No one can ever do what they did again, but we can take what we’ve gotten from that and go on with it and take it somewhere else,” says Ivan Neville, Dumpsta’s keyboardist, singer, occasional guitarist and general lightning rod – the man just generates energy and raw charisma each time he steps up. “We’re after it ALL THE TIME. And there’s a tension in that because we want to push ourselves. We know that a lot of groups have tried to do similar stuff to The Meters. We know that’s been done, and nobody’s gonna do that the way they did it. We are capable of doing that stuff but we try to take it to the next level. We honor tradition but, at the same time, we’re trying to push it forward. And we’ve got five voices that are all very opinionated, and that creates some tension but good tension at times. We’re a real band, a democracy, and that’s hard, but that makes the music that much more powerful because we take that little edge into the music.”
