As you know Isaac hit New Orleans pretty hard.  Wife, Dog and I evacuated to Monroe, LA. prior to the storm. It was our first evacuation. We brought too much stuff.  We came back to no damage, except that our landlord had looted our freezer of tater tots.   Lot of folks outside the levee system were not so lucky.  Come out to one of the shows and I'll tell you more...

This Broadway star and musical chameleon has performed in punk bands and rock musicals, terrified audiences as Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd on Broadway and took home a Tony for his role in Sondheim’s Assassins, and currently plays the mysterious character “the observer” in the hit TV series Fringe. Here, he brings us An Idea of South, a genre-defying recital/cabaret/hootenanny of songs ranging from the Carter Family and Johnny Mercer to Vic Chesnutt and Samuel Barber with guest musicians from New Orleans. Alex McMurray be at Sullivan Hall 214 Sullivan St. in the West Village this Friday January 15th at 11:00. The band is going to be a killer. You may be familiar with my old pal Bill Malchow. Well, besides being a fine pianist and an even finer American he's put together a bunch of ringers this time out. The great Scott Bourgeois on saxophone, Louie Appel (of the staggering resume) on drums, and Skip Ward on bass. We'll be doing a good long set--none of this 45 minute nonsense--and will be featuring music from my latest CD "How To Be A Cannonball". We're also going to stretch out on a lot of classic New Orleans R&B. It'll be real gone pecan...

"Sweet William, Blackbeard, Brother Bill, Lippy the Pants, Captain Bill"... I'm a big fan of piano led New Orleans Rhythm & Blues, straight ahead blues, funkier jazz and actually anything that'll get your body moving a bit. Think James Booker, Dr John, Huey Smith, Prof Longhair, Otis Spann, Memphis Slim, and Horace Silver. I have my own group that goes by several different names depending on my moooood. "Bill Malchow & Friends", "BMF", "The Go Cup All Stars", "Bill Malchow & the Barbecue Banshees " and "Sue".
