The 4th Annual Backbeat Jazzfest Series is proud to announce their finalized lineup of shows for 2009. This year the Backbeat Jazzfest Series spreads across the city presenting 33 shows with nearly 60 acts at 6 venues: Blue Nile and Blue Nile Upstairs; Tipitina's French Quarter; Republic NOLA; and this year introducing the newest addition of the 1000 capacity Studio at Colton Theater and the 300 capacity Red Ballroom at Colton.
The Backbeat Jazzfest Series partnered with the Louisiana Campaign For Tobacco Free Living to offer music lovers and the musicians they love smoke-free environments at all shows. The Backbeat Jazz Fest Series will provide an opportunity for festival goers to personally and intimately experience the magic of our music while supporting a worthy cause that benefits the health of our musicians, and the music and culture of our city on the rise.
The newest venue to the series, The Studio At Colton Theater at 2300 St. Claude Avenue, is a post-Katrina grass-roots conversion project of an old public school. Through the sweat of the residents, classrooms have been renovated into artist studios space and there is public assembly space including a 1000 capacity theater with a large built-in stage. It has a large open space in front of the stage and some theatre style seating toward the back. The Prospect 1 International Art Biennial featured some events and exhibits there and it is where Krewe du Vieux held their Mardi Gras Ball this year. It is located on the burgeoning St. Claude arts corridor that has generated a good bit of development interest from the artistic and real estate communities. It is walking distance from famed Frenchmen Street and on a major bus line (and 1 block from the Hi-Ho Lounge).
The latest show additions include the Roots of Music All Star Benefit with Ivan Neville, Big Sam, Anders Osborne and more; The Iguanas, Seth Walker and OO7; Charmaine Neville; Topaz & Mudphonic; Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey; Shannon Powell plus Big Chief Monk Boudreaux album release party and many more.
These new shows join the already impressive roster for 2009 including such musical heavyweights as Dirty Dozen Brass Band featuring Booker T followed by Hill Country Revue at Republic NOLA on April 24th; Ghostland Observatory, also at Republic NOLA on April 30th; Cyril Neville with special guests Tab Benoit and Jumpin' Johnny Sansone with The Wild Magnolias featuring Big Chief Bo Dollis and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux at Tipitina's French Quarter on April 30th; and Medeski Martin and Wood with DJ Logic at The Studio at Colton Theater on May 2nd.
The series will host additional performances by local standouts such as Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Big Sam's Funky Nation; and national acts such as Dave Matthews Band guitarist Tim Reynolds & TR3; New York City's Soulive; San Francisco's Steve Kimock Crazy Engine; Austin's (Grammy Award-Winning) Grupo Fantasma; and a rare performance by Bustle In Your Hedgerow featuring Marco Benevento, Joe Russo and more. The official series website is www.backbeatpresents.com Advance tickets available through Ticketweb.com and (866) 468-7619.
