Jazzfest, which took place this year on seven days from April 25 through Sunday, revolves around familiar songs, distinctive rituals and the time-tested recipes of its justly celebrated food vendors.
New Orleans songs, old and new, draw on rhythms that reach back at least a century, with even older African, European and American Indian roots. Parades representing the city’s traditions of brass bands, Mardi Gras Indians and Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs wound through the festival, sometimes ending up at the Heritage Stage, where brass bands and Indians performed full-length sets.see also: Famous food, music are back in rebounding New Orleans

Jazz Fest: Wet and wild captures the spirit in New Orleans
Even with its staggering diversity of artists, Jazz Fest seldom serves up anyone as eccentric as Bobby Lounge, the singer/pianist who made his third consecutive Jazz Fest appearance before a large, enthusiastic throng. Introducing the reclusive McComb, Miss., resident, toastmaster Calvin Tubbs, said, "I've been paid an amazing amount of money to lend some gravitas to these proceedings." Fat chance.

"Friends and strangers alike greeting each other on the Fairgrounds and around the city with "Happy Fest!" -- as though Jazz Fest were an acknowledged holiday like Christmas or Mardi Gras or St. Patrick's Day. Store clerks and waiters would wish you a Happy Fest, not just those at the fairgrounds."

The Raconteurs Steal JazzFest
The Raconteurs basically put forth a hard cutting though soulful rock and roll that usually doesn’t slip past the baby-boomer funk loving talent net of the Jazz Fest. Led by Jack White of the White Stripes with Brendan Benson to his right on vocals and guitar along with the rest of the band behind them, they rocked the set so thoroughly that the leftovers from Galactic and early birds for the Radiators just looked at them and said “huh?”
